Chopped PBI

PBI (polybenzimidazole) fiber is an advanced high-performance fiber known for its exceptional thermal stability, inherent flame resistance, and outstanding chemical resistance. With one of the highest limiting oxygen index (LOI) values of any organic fiber, PBI will not melt, drip, or support combustion, making it ideal for demanding high-heat and flame-exposure environments. In addition to its thermal performance, PBI offers excellent strength retention at elevated temperatures and long-term durability in harsh industrial conditions.

Rocket-Fibers’ PBI fibers are manufactured in the United States and are available in precision-cut lengths and continuous filament forms to meet a wide range of application requirements—from protective textiles and filtration media to high-temperature composites and specialty industrial uses. Our PBI fiber offerings support Berry Amendment compliance requirements for U.S. Department of Defense and related government programs when applicable documentation is requested. If the length or form you require is not listed in stock, please contact us for custom processing options. Batch-level Certificates of Analysis (COA), including full lot traceability, are available upon request.

  • Product Performance

    • Inherently flame resistant — will not melt, drip, or support combustion, even under direct flame exposure.

    • Retains mechanical strength at temperatures where most organic fibers rapidly degrade.

    • Features an exceptionally high Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), requiring elevated oxygen levels to sustain combustion.

    • Delivers outstanding thermal stability and dimensional retention in continuous high-heat environments.

    • Resists chemical exposure and long-term thermal aging.

    • Improves composite heat resistance, char stability, and structural performance without significant weight gain.

    PBI Resistance Guide

PBI (polybenzimidazole) fiber offers exceptional thermal stability and inherent flame resistance, making it one of the most heat-resistant organic fibers available. It does not melt or drip and maintains mechanical integrity at elevated temperatures. PBI also provides strong chemical resistance and excellent long-term durability in extreme environments. However, like most high-performance organic fibers, it can degrade under prolonged UV exposure.

This fiber will slowly degrade with long term exposure to UV light.

Acid: Excellent resistant to most acids
Alkali: Good resistance to most alkalis
Organic Solvent: Generally compatible with a variety of organic solvents.

Continuous Operating Temperature Range (°C): 260
    Short Term Exposure (°C): 400+
    Melt Temperature (°C): N/A
